Yoga Sutras of Patanjali translated by Yogi Kalinath - Chapter 3, Verse 12

Pada 3, Sutra 12

Sanskrit Verse

Tatah punah Shaatoditau tulya-pratyayau cittasyaikaagrataa-parinaamah

Translation

Then again when the mind processes that arise are always alike to the mind processes that subside, one-pointed consciousness emerges.

Interpretation

The nature of the mind is to oscillate so in our Sadhana we become conscious of and apply a three phase process. First we become aware of and apply restraint to the mind wandering towards external objects via the agency of the senses. With constant and prolonged practice, our mind turns within and starts becoming aware of its fluctuations based on internal distractions such as memories, anticipations and subtle desires. When we witness these without judgment they are quelled and inner silence is experienced. In the third phase, consciousness becomes aware of consciousness itself and the transcendental light of the Self shines through.

The first phase leads to Nirodha or restraint. The second phase leads to Samadhi or cognitive absorption and the third phase leads to Ekagrata Parinama when consciousness is uplifted to the level of the Atman or the Self.

Reflection

‘Do not judge lest you want to be judged’ and ‘do not resist evil’. Develop equanimity towards all that you witness without and within in order not to create false idols fashioned by the mind.
