Yoga Sutras of Patanjali translated by Yogi Kalinath - Chapter 2, Verse 34

Pada 2, Sutra 34

Sanskrit Verse

Vitarkaa hinsaadayah krta-kaaritaanumoditaa lobha-krodha-moha-purvakaa mrdu-madhyaadhimaatraa duhkhaajnaanaananta-phalaa iti pratipaksa-bhaavanam

Translation

Unwholesome negative thoughts and actions such as harming whether done, caused to be done or approved of, whether incited by greed, anger or infatuation, whether mild, moderate or excessive , they are based on ignorance and bring certain pain. Their opposites should be cultivated.

Interpretation

As human beings we have a responsibility to ourselves and others in not causing harm or expressing any other negative traits that will ultimately cause us and others pain. Unwholesome negative thoughts and actions are obstacles on the path and in our progress in Yoga, the path to Self-realization. To the best of our abilities we should create a pleasant environment both internally and externally. Both the Kingdoms of Heaven and Hell are truly within us and therefore within our control. So when unwholesome negative traits come up, cultivate their opposites, transmuting a potential hell to a heavenly state.

Reflection

By our thoughts, words and actions are we creating hell or heaven daily for ourselves and others?
