Yoga Sutras of Patanjali translated by Yogi Kalinath - Chapter 3, Verse 52

Pada 3, Sutra 52

Sanskrit Verse

Ksana-tat-kramayoh sanyamaad viveka-jam jnaanam

Translation

By constraint on single moments and on their sequential progression, one obtains knowledge born of discernment.

Interpretation

Mind is the cognitive instrument of relativity as it can only refer and infer on events based in space and time. The bridge to the Timeless is to constrain awareness to the Here and Now which is called the moment. The sequential progress of these moments is what gives rise to what is called time. Past and future are therefore all relative to these moments in space and time.

Illusion (losing track of the moment), delusion (forgetting the moment) and pain (identification with the vehicles of time, i.e. body and mind) are therefore the construct of our manufactured self called ego. Likewise, awareness of the moment and unreserved acceptance of change as implicit of the sequential progression of what we identify as time is called direct perception and wisdom born of discernment.

Reflection

Life is made of time. And time is made of moments. Master the moment and not only do your master time but you master life itself. This is the true definition of mastery.
